WP2 THz system concepts & exp. Preliminary investigations

The power density of the signal that can be achieved at the measuring or receiving location is a very critical parameter for all THz systems. Despite considerable progress in the past, the transmission power achievable with semiconductor components at 1 THz is still below 100 µW [SED/2022]. For this reason, highly focused antennas are required which, depending on the application, must also be swiveled quickly. This results in the need for beamforming processes that can be realized both actively by electronically controlled fields of THz emitters and passively by mechanically adjustable antennas as well as by micromechanically or electronically controlled reflector fields.
The aim of WP2 is to improve the performance of existing system concepts, thereby enabling them to be used for new applications and to develop new system concepts that open up new applications. The possibility of miniaturization, especially for mobile or portable applications, as well as the ability to integrate them, in order to create cost-effective mass products in the future, are of great importance.
